The short version
- Memroll analyzes your photos on your iPhone. Your photos are never uploaded to us or to anyone else.
- Memroll only reads your photo library. It never changes or deletes a photo.
- There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. The app contains no third-party SDKs.
- Place names are looked up in maps built into the app, not through an online service.
- The only data that can reach us is a numbers-only test report, and only if you are a TestFlight tester and choose to send it.
Who we are
Memroll is made by Memroll (“we”, “us”). For privacy questions, contact legal@memroll.app.
Your photo library
Memroll asks for access to your Photos library through Apple's standard permission. It uses that access to read a year of your photos and pick about three moments for each month. You can change or withdraw access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos.
From each photo it can read the information Photos already holds: the date, size, location, whether it is a favorite, and capture details such as Live Photo, HDR or Portrait. For a smaller set of frames it reads the image itself and the original file's metadata (EXIF). Screenshots and hidden photos are skipped.
Memroll never writes anything back to your library. It does not edit, move, tag or delete photos.
How photos are analyzed
All analysis runs on your iPhone:
- Apple Vision, built into iOS, finds labels, text, faces (not who they are), image quality and the main subject of a photo.
- Apple Intelligence, if your iPhone supports it and it is turned on, describes the photos Memroll is about to pick. Memroll uses Apple's on-device model for this.
- An optional image model bundled in the app (Google SigLIP 2) compares photos with a fixed list of descriptions such as “food” or “a pet”.
Memroll does not identify people. Face detection only counts and measures faces in a photo; it does not recognize who they are.
Location and place names
Memroll does not ask for your location. It uses the location that is already stored in your photos to group them into moments, estimate your usual home area, spot trips, and name countries and towns in your rewind.
Countries and town names come from datasets bundled inside the app (see Acknowledgements). The lookup happens on your iPhone. No coordinates are sent to a geocoding or map service.
Photos stored in iCloud
If your library uses iCloud Photos, some originals may not be on your iPhone. You choose whether Memroll may download them. If you allow it, Apple Photos downloads the originals it needs from your iCloud account, in the same way the Photos app does. That transfer is between your iPhone and Apple and is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not receive those photos. If you don't allow it, Memroll works with the copies already on your iPhone.
What is stored on your iPhone
To avoid scanning again, Memroll saves its results in the app's own storage on your iPhone: analysis results, the picks, your Right and Wrong marks, saved runs and your settings. This data is protected by iOS data protection, stays on your device and is not sent to us. Your iPhone's own backups (iCloud or computer) may include it, according to your backup settings.
You can erase it with the reset option in the app, or by deleting the app.
Test reports (TestFlight testers only)
Pre-release testers can choose to send us a results report. Nothing is sent automatically. The app shows you every value in the report before you share it, and you choose how to send it, for example by email, AirDrop or Messages.
The report contains only numbers and short descriptions:
| Included | Never included |
|---|---|
| The year tested; how many picks you marked right or wrong; how many missed moments you wanted; a library size range; iPhone model; iOS version; whether Apple Intelligence was available; minutes taken; app version; selection engine version. | Photos, thumbnails, photo IDs or file names, dates, places, faces, or any text the app generated about your photos. |
When you send a report, we also receive whatever the channel you chose shows us, such as your email address or name. We use reports only to improve how Memroll picks photos. We keep them for 12 months and you can ask us to delete yours at legal@memroll.app.
Apple's TestFlight may also give us crash reports and feedback you choose to submit through TestFlight, as described in Apple's TestFlight terms.
What we don't collect
- No accounts, names or email addresses (unless you email us).
- No analytics, crash-reporting or advertising SDKs.
- No tracking across apps or websites, and no data sold or shared with data brokers.
The app's privacy manifest declares no tracking and no collected data. Its only declared “required reason” API is iOS user defaults, used to remember the app's own settings.
This website
www.memroll.app is a static site hosted by Vercel. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Like any web host, Vercel processes technical data such as your IP address to deliver pages and protect the service; see Vercel's Privacy Policy.
Children
Memroll is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone through the app itself.
Your rights
Because your photos and analysis stay on your iPhone, you control them directly: withdraw Photos access, reset the app or delete it. Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or UK GDPR), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, such as a test report you sent us, and to complain to your data protection authority. Contact us at legal@memroll.app.
Changes
If Memroll's handling of data changes, we will update this page and the date above before the change ships.
